The Importance of
What is Heartworm Disease?
Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in pets in the United States and many other parts of the world. It is caused by foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the pulmonary artery of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body.
Annual testing is an important part of monitoring for this disease. The American Heartworm Society recommends year-round prevention for dogs and cats in the U.S., even in regions that experience cold winters. And with unpredictable weather patterns and the ability for hardy mosquitoes to survive in protected areas, it's difficult to predict when heartworms aren't in season.
Fortunately, heartworm prevention is highly effective when given faithfully, and the year-round cost of preventing the desease in dogs is a small fraction of the cost of heartworm treatments.
